Our Counselor in Training (CIT) and Junior Counselor in Training (Jr. CIT) programs present an exciting way we can continue to grow together, even after your child enters his or her teens.

Junior Counselors-in-Training (Jr. CITs)
Junior CITs are 12- and 13-year-olds who get the benefit both of attending Arts Camp and learning skills that will make for a smooth transition to the CIT program in the future. This is a beginning training year.

Junior CITs will help with snacks, prepare and host clubs during Clubtime and be conscious of helping younger children be at ease at camp and with camp activities. Other responsibilities may be assigned depending upon need and the interests and abilities of the Junior CIT.

This training period will help us evaluate the Junior CITs' maturity and potential as a Counselor in Training, while still enabling them to attend classes and develop their artistic skills. Our experience suggests that at 12, a child may still primarily wish to play, and we encourage parents to allow these youngsters to remain campers until age 13. Only if a child really wants to work should he or she apply to become a Junior CIT.

Counselors in Training
At age 13, after initial training, the role of Counselor in Training becomes an option. There is a one-week evaluation period to permit them (and us) to determine if this is a position they would really like. It is a position of great responsibility, and includes first and foremost being with the younger children and helping them be happy and comfortable at camp. Additional responsibilities may include paperwork, aiding teachers in classes and helping campers with their class projects, helping keep the camp neat and in order on a daily basis, running Clubs as Junior Teachers, and training Jr. CITs. CITs also take some art classes or participate in planned art activities to allow them to continue to develop their creative side and artistic skills.

This year, CITs will work more intensely and with more direction from teachers they assist. Depending on how many CITs are available, a CIT may assist one teacher for a full day or even a week.

A three-week commitment is preferred for a CIT, but we are open to discussing your needs. Pre-camp training sessions, which CIT's and Jr. CIT's must attend, are scheduled for June 7 from 12:30 to 4 pm and June 14 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

We depend on the CITs, and they need to arrive on time to meet with their assigned teachers and the program manager, and stay through the end of camp each day until their responsibilities are discharged.

CITs receive a deduction in camp tuition. For more information, please contact Judy Rattner, CIT program coordinator, at (510) 215 9116 ot 719 8781
