Children are grouped into classes according to age. All classes are age appropriate
Ages 6 & 7 in the younger age group; Ages 8 & 9 in the middle age group and 9 - 12 in the older age group. Middle age group may overlap ages.

A Painting of "Me"
Teaching Artist: Gabriela Nunez

Campers will paint a self-portrait by looking their faces in mirrors. In this class kids will create their self-portrait very special by adding special things in the painting like favorite shirt or hat, a pet or a baseball glove. Campers will learn basic human form .Also; they will learn different painting techniques (acrylics)  like how to mix colors or how to create skin tones.

Clay Action Figures: Clay Hand Building
Teaching Artist: Shuhui Yang

Creating a model of a self portraits. This week students will learn the technique of coil, slab and other basic technique to make a action figure of themselves.

Sew your Socks Off
Teaching Artist: Annie Goodsill

We will turn our socks into the sweetest doll or animal of your choice! Your soft sweet ?stuffie? will be hand sewn with a long mane of hair (or fur) and an embroidered or beaded face. Design your new pal an outfit for every occasion. You will be so excited to bring home your new friend at the end of the week.

Frosting Madness (one day class)

Art with sugar. Learn how to make different kinds of frosting and create your own unique cake decoration. Learn with the tools of the trade.

Anthropomorphic Flowers
Teaching Artist: Annie Goodsill

In this class we will focus on the flower as a biological specimen that we will compare to humans and maybe a monster too! Then we will focus on the flower in abstract, and learn about composition. These two approaches on the flower will allow us to experience the versatility in objects of inspiration that also help us appreciate different styles of paintings. As we look at flowers and give them a new, supernatural personality. Annies' Website

Capoeira & Tumbling
Teaching Artist: Melissa Crago

Capoeira is an Afro-Brasilian dance / fight martial art. Through the course of the week kids will learn basics kicks and defense as well as some acrobatics, singing and playing musical instruments.

Sew Much Fun: Sewing
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

In this class we will learn to use the sewing machine to make simple garments and accessories of our own creation. We will sew and work creatively to make one of a kind truly unique pieces. Students will be encouraged to design and plan a special project for themselves , with lots of helpful inspiration and projects to chose from. We will culminate the week with a Park Day Arts Camp Runway show to show off our work to family and friends !

Simple & Fun Print Making
Teaching Artist: Gabriela Nunez

Campers will explore different techniques for making prints. The fun and beauty of printing is you can reproduce the image over and over using a printing block, tool, stamp, foam, various different items or a beautiful leaf. Kids can create unique designs and patterns. Print making is great for making greeting cards, decorate different things or a beautiful presents.

Pandemonium Puppets
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

Learn to make your very own awesome hand puppet out of fabric! This is no simple sock puppet and there will be no glue. Students will learn real puppet making techniques and be using both sewing machines and hand sewing to create a puppet pal that will be a quality theatrical piece. Let the spontaneous puppet shows ensue !

Soap: Scent & Color (2 day class)

Teaching Artist: Judy Rattner

A Favorite! Everyone one loves soap. During process of creating our soaps, we melt different types glycerin soaps. For each soap one scent (out of many) is mixed into the soap then the color is added and then the mixture is poured into the mold of choice. The process is the same for each class although the molds and techniques will vary. Each class will offer something different. it is always great fun and has a function. Can you beat that? Each weeks soapmaking classes will offer something different.

B-Boy / B-Girl Dance (2 day class)
Teaching Artist: Dereek "DerLeek"

B - Boy / B - Girl dancing is an exciting style of breakdancing that goes beyond the basics of breakdancing. In this class the basics to breakdancing will be covered with an additional focus to B Boy. Although B Boying is a title earned and one must work hard; the lucky participants in this class will be introduced and taught some of components that are found in "B - Boy / B - Girl". Some styles may include: the breakdown of battles (battle of skills), leg sweeps, power movers and freezes.

Picasso - Bearden: Mixed Media Painting
Teaching Artist: Kara Fortune

The class will look at abstract artists such as Pablo Picasso & R. Bearden. Students will be asked to create a collage, drawing or painting using photos, wood, fabric or stencils. Students will choose a figurative work or their ideas of how they see themselves in the world.

Monster Madness with Meredith: Sewing
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

Dragons and Beasts , Unicorns and Griffins: Monsters are the most amazing creatures never to exist! In this class we will imagine and concoct wild and weird monsters of our own. Using simple hand stitching techniques and our creativity, we will sew up some fierce and furry creatures to be our beastly companions.
Make amazing monsters with Oakland's finest professional monster maker!! We will use had and machine sewing to make magical, fantastical monsters and creatures come to life! With ample supplies, fun fur, sequins and our imaginations. There is nothing we cannot create. The fun will be monstrous !

Stone Shaping
(4 day class)

Teaching Artist: Judy Rattner

Use tools such as: rasps, files, sandpaper, wax and steel wool to alter the natural state of a stone. See how you can make marks and shape a solid stone. See how soft and hard a stone can be and where you need to be gentle and where you can make larger alterations. The process itself is both exciting and rewarding. Create a new relationship; you, a stone and a hand tool.

Yoga
(1 day class)

Teaching Artist: Erin Collin

As campers are introduced to Yoga poses, meditation, affirmations, basic anatomy, and breath work, they will become more connected to themselves, others, and the world. While improving balance, flexibility, and energy, the classes will foster mental skills like concentration, curiosity and non-judgement.
Campers will rest their productive, creative, DOING, selves and explore simple Yoga poses, games, and breath exercises. This fun, indoor-outdoor, class fosters self-awareness, balance, flexibility and energized calm.

Fantastical Architecture: Collage
Teaching Artist: Elise Mahan

Fantastical Architecture is based on experimentation with mixed media painting and collage. Throughout this week long class, we will be focusing with a variety of materials, and each student will be given the opportunity to learn about painting, collage, drawing and marbling techniques. Students will also have the opportunity to focus on one particular painting for the week, as well as work together as a community to create a short story using these mixed media techniques as inspiration. .

Student will be creating a game for themselves. Different age group will design a different game. In the process of making they will learn some basic clay making techniques!!

3 - D Fantasy: Toy Sculpture
Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Ever wonder where lost toys go? They travel to places few people ever get to see until they return in a place called 3 - D Fantasy. Toys and things are assembled onto a wooden base that may have various levels and become an assemblage of fantasy. When toys come together, they create a make believe world that is as different as the person creating this toy inspired sculpture. Imagination and inspiration meet and become a one of a kind wonderland of creativity.

Imagining your World: Creative Art Painting & Drawing
Teaching Artist: Alan Leon


This week is for kids who like to paint or think they might. We will make a big book of watercolor paintings, each on a particular exercise about the environment and how we relate to it. Our paintings will include topographic lifescapes, maps and microcosms, trees and animals, mountains and valleys, architecture, and different ways of looking at the physical world. Creative expression and experimentation is encouraged and as is written about watercolor...." we will anticipate and leverage the behavior or water " and learn to delight in discovering happy accidents.

Basketry & Fiber Sculpture
Teaching Artist: Gina Telcocci

In this class students will learn basic basketry techniques, including stake and strand and twining methods, using traditional materials like reed and rattan. After making simple baskets, we will experiment with creating sculptural forms using the same techniques. Non-traditional and recycled materials may be used as well.

Cooking

In this class students will get lots of hands on experience cooking and working in the kitchen. Students will learn basic knife skills and cooking methods. Students will learn about fresh ingredients that are in season, and recipes and methods that foster creativity and improvisation. We will be making and, of course eating a wide variety of fun foods from around the world. If baking is your thing, have no fears, we will also spend at least one day of the week on a baking project.

Cartoon Arts
Teaching Artist: Doug Calderon

We enter the wonderful world of cartooning and learn to develop our drawing skill. Explore character development and storytelling. Create your very own cartoon character and comic strip. Drawing and inking techniques will be used, in addition to writing a comic book story.


Frankenstein Creature Lab: Sewing
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

In this class we will play Dr. Frankenstein by creating our own monsters out of pieces of other stuffed animals and dolls. We will ever sew up some body parts of our own to throw in the mix. We will use hand sewing, hot glue or absolutely whatever it takes to make our mis-matched creatures come alive!

Tableshop: Woodworking
Teaching Artist: David Dawson

This class is for anybody who likes to work with wood, or to create patterns with color and shapes. Students in Tableshop will be designing and making their own hardwood tables to bring home at the end of the week. They will have the opportunity to work with drills, handsaws, orbital sanders and other tools as they build their tables out of certified sustainably-grown wood from all over the world.

Wire Kingdom: Drawing Animals in 3 - D
Teaching Artist: Gina Telcocci

In this class we will create a kingdom full of whimsical animal sculptures, as we explore stories and characters of favorite animals. Wire bending, forming, and attaching techniques will be taught. Students will learn how to translate basic line drawing approaches, such as contour, cross-contour, and gestural line, into 3-Dimensional forms.

Salvage Sewing: Re-Imagine Clothing
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

There's no need to buy the latest trends , you can make it yourself with a little creative ingenuity. In this class we will transform any old garment into something new and hip. We will learn how to use a sewing machine and work with basic pattern techniques. Your old t-shirt may be worn and torn , but it could have a new life as a ruffled skirt or hooded coat . We'll be sewing up some fierce fashions for everyone , even if you've never sewn before.It's rewarding and fun to turn something tired into some inspired! Hand & Machine Sewing

Digital Photography


Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Learn to use a camera and how to take photos. The class will be divided into a small group (3 or 4 kids per group) sharing a camera and taking turns photographing one another. The focus of the class will be on portraits and taking people photographs. We will have a slide show to review each persons photos and then print the photos at camp using a color printer. Students will also have a chance to make their own picture frames for their photos..

Porcelain Jewelry
Teaching Artist: Julie Travis

This class will be a combination of hand building and mold pressing. Each student will collect from nature, various objects that can be cast in plaster to create a pendant. Along with the pendants, the children may learn various bead making and hand building techniques that will enable them to craft their own porcelain jewelry pieces.


African Animals: Drawing
Teaching Artist: Gabriela Nunez

Each day will be drawing an animal from Africa. We will be drawing step by step. Kids will learn to draw animals using basic shapes as a guide. Also, in this class campers will learn how to capture basic animal form, texture and add detail. Each student?s drawing will be created differently by adding a background and their personal touch. Campers will learn and explore colored pencils techniques on various type of paper.

Mayan Calendar & Aztec Dance
Teaching Artist: Ernesto Hernandez Olmas

Imagine being guided by spirit as you play ceramic ocarinas, whistles and flutes and other traditional instruments. These ancient instruments are still played in ceremonies and celebrations in different native communities around world. Using different techniques (storytelling, art, music & dance) we will share some of the legacies left by our ancestors. Campers will learn about the ancient traditions and cultural heritage of the Americas, including the Mayan calendar. Campers can gain a respectful understanding of which Meso American cultures were the foundation the Americas and what was special about these cultures. We will tell a story, play music and express ourselves thru traditional Aztec dance
