2010 Classes & Description

Class descriptions are pending on some classes. TBA = to be announced

Children are grouped into classes according to age. All classes are age appropriate
Ages 6 & 7 in the younger age group; Ages 8 & 9 in the middle age group and 9 - 12 in the older age group. Middle age group may overlap ages.

Cooking with Elise
Teaching Artist: Elise Mahan

This cooking class will be a combination of food history and preparation, which entails showing how these recipes can be understood not only in terms of their tastiness, but also their value within the larger social, environmental, and artistic context. There will be discussion, art projects, games and readings in each class to explore these concepts and how they relate to the foods being explored and cooked. Composting, sustainability, health and recycling will be a key component of the class as well. we will have a range of recipes that span different cultures, and the finale will be a handmade recipe book that each camper will be able to design and take home at the end of the week.

Monster Madness: Sewing
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

Dragons and Beasts , Unicorns and Griffins: Monsters are the most amazing creatures never to exist! In this class we will imagine and concoct wild and weird monsters of our own. Using simple hand stitching techniques and our creativity, we will sew up some fierce and furry creatures to be our beastly companions. The fun will be monstrous!

Mixed Media Painting
Teaching Artist: Amanda Lockwood

This is a great class for kids who like to incorporate elements of collage into their paintings. Kids can include xeroxes of their favorite photographs from home, fabric scraps and and found 2-d materials to collage onto a flat surface and spend the final days of the week drawing and painting into their collage. We'll look at a variety of images from artists who use found objects in their paintings, from the masters like Romare Bearden to contemporary artists who work this way today, such as Wenchengi Mutu and Anselm Keifer.

Figurative Drawing
Teaching Artist: Gabriela Nunez

Covers basic drawing skills of observation, selection, representation, and hand-eye mind coordination. Students will be drawing from a model using soft pastels or chalk. They will learn the materials techniques, such as, blending colors.

Environmental Sculputre
Teaching Artist: Amanda Lockwood

This is a mixed media sculpture class with an emphasis on nature and our impact on the environment. Each child will use a variety of materials, including air-dry clay, recycled paper pulp, found materials from the garden and household recycled materials to create a small sculpture that uses the nature world as its inspiration. There will be an educational component that focuses on the science of recycling and composting as well as a hands-on experience with using paper scraps bound for the trash to create beautiful hand-made papers that can be incorporated into our sculptures.

Intro to Break Dancing
Teaching Artist: Derrick " DereLeek"

Taught by world famous Derrick "DereLeek" who encompasses the breakdown of breakdancing. Beginning Breakdancing covers the knowledge and the how to of beginning breakdancing. Being taught the fundamentals and basics, one then can use it and create their own style and flavor. Toprocks, basic footwork steps and fundamentals are covered.

Fun with Soap (two day class)

A Favorite! Everyone one loves soap. During process of creating our soaps, we melt different types glycerin soaps. For each soap one scent (out of many) is mixed into the soap then the color is added and then the mixture is poured into the mold of choice. The process is the same for each class although the molds and techniques will vary. Each class will offer something different. it is always great fun and has a function. Can you beat that? Each weeks soapmaking classes will offer something different.

Clay: Handbuilding

Students will learn how to make pottery and sculpture using the hand building techniques of pinching and coiling. Projects will include cups and bowls as well as animal sculptures.

It's New to You: Sewing
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

There's no need to buy the latest trends , you can make it yourself with a little creative ingenuity. In this class we will transform any old garment into something new and hip. We will learn how to use a sewing machine and work with basic pattern techniques. Your old t-shirt may be worn and torn, but you can give it a new life as skirt of vest or almost anything you can imagine. Insideout Landscapes: Acrylic Painting
Teaching Artist: Judy Rattner

Paint for the Love of Paint/Painting
Students will have an opportunity to paint from reality, utilizing the beautiful outdoor grounds of Park Day Summer Arts Camp. The Campers will be encouraged to develop their paintings using their imaginations and some of the "formal painting elements". This help guide them in their interactions with their canvases. Every day we will focus on fun and love of painting!
day 1 focus: paint, composition, imagery
day 2 focus: outdoor painting
day 3 focus: indoor/or outdoor painting depending on class
day 4 focus: details and completion of their art works


Yummy Cooking (1 day class)
Teaching Artist: Melissa Crago

The incredible edible egg: crack eggs, separate egg whites and yolks and make various breakfast egg dishes, including crepes or French toast

Tumbling (1 day class)
Teaching Artist: Melissa Crago

We will focus on basic acrobatics and tumbling: handstands, cartwheels, dive rolls, bridge walk over and more. Students will learn how to improve strength, flexibility, agility, work together and have lots of fun.

World Textile Design
Teaching Artist: Kara Fortune

Textile design and techniques from around the world. Exploring Indonesian, African and Native American textile and printing techniques. Students will create stamps, stencils tie dying and also block printing designs / patterns on fabric.

Fantasy Car Creations
Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Starting with a rectangular piece of wood and 4 wooden wheels, campers begin to add found objects to create their own unique fantasy car. Working with small toys, pieces of plastic, wooden shapes, beads, shells and other assorted materials, campers will attach everything with "cool melt" hot glue. Make a space car, kitchen car, outdoor car, bedroom car, rocket car, split level car... unlimited possibilities.

Cartooneria: Paper Mache
Teaching Artist: Gabriela Nunez

It is a Latin-American art paper mache. In this class kids will use recycled materials such as, newspaper, cardboard and brown paper bags. Students will create a colorful 3D piece of art such as animals, vases, boxes, bowls and plates. Art pieces will be painted and decorated.

Capoeira / Tumbling
Teaching Artist: Melissa Crago

In this class we will go over the basic Capoeria movements and defenses, learn Capoeira songs in Portuguese and how to play the basic instruments used in Capoeira. We will also focus on basic acrobatics and tumbling: handstands, cartwheels, dive rolls, bridge walk over and more. Students will learn how to improve strength, flexibility, agility, team work and leadership while having lots of fun.

Digital Photography
Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Learn to use a camera and how to take photos. The class will be divided into a small group (3 or 4 kids per group) sharing a camera and taking turns photographing one another. The focus of the class will be on portraits and taking people photographs. We will have a slide show to review each persons photos and then print the photos at camp using a color printer. Students will also have a chance to make their own picture frames for their photos.

Exqisite Embellishments & Embroidery: Sewing (2 day class)
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod


We will use fabric paint , photo transfers, raised relief sewing, embroidery and all manor of buttons and sequins to create very special dimensional textile works of art. We will bedazzle plain fabric into something truly fantastic. The end result will be an absolute textile triumph!

Mixed Media Jewelry
Teaching Artist: Laurel Nathanson


In this class the kids will get to learn different materials and processes so they can create their own one of a kind wearable art. Materials include beads, different cords and stringing materials, copper and brass. Processes include wire working, texturing and punching metals, and finishing techniques. The campers will love being able to wear something they have made and will strut their stuff proudly!!

Fantastic Fashion
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

In this class everyone will get to be a star designer. We will work with basic patterns and home sewing machines to create one of a kind pieces of fashion. From bags and hats to simple shirts and dresses. We have tons of fun fabrics and cool notions to make our projects super special.

Crazy Creature Re-Mix: Sewing

In this class we will play Dr. Frankenstein by creating our own monsters out of pieces of other stuffed animals and dolls. We will ever sew up some body parts of our own to throw in the mix. We will use hand sewing, hot glue or absolutely whatever it takes to make our mis-matched creatures come alive!

Pop Art Pet Paintings

What is Pop Art? In this class we will explore that question while painting colorful pictures of our pets! Learn all about line and use of color, composition and abstraction. If you don't have a pet, how about painting a pet you wish you had! (A purple and orange zebra?)

We enter the wonderful world of cartooning and learn to develop our drawing skill. Explore character development and storytelling. Create your very own cartoon character and comic strip. Drawing and inking techniques will be used, in addition to writing a comic book story.

Woodworking
Teaching Artist: David Dawson

Wood Box Shop - Wood comes in many colors and patterns. Starting with pieces of rare and beautiful wood, campers will design their own box that might have a hinged or fitted lid, a secret compartment, and perhaps inlaid mosaic designs. Using handsaws, sanders, files, drills, clamps and glue, they will cut, assemble and finish their own finely crafted pieces of functional art.

Intro to B Boy / B Girl Dance
Teaching Artist: Dereek "DerLeek"

B - Boy / B - Girl dancing is an exciting style of breakdancing that goes beyond the basics of breakdancing. In this class the basics to breakdancing will be covered with an additional focus to B Boy. Although B Boying is a title earned and one must work hard; the lucky participants in this class will be introduced and taught some of components that are found in "B - Boy / B - Girl". Some styles may include: the breakdown of battles (battle of skills), leg sweeps, power movers and freezes.

Plastic Fantastic
Teaching Artist: Laurel Nathanson

Did you know Plexiglas can be used for more than just windows and cocktail menu stands? In fact, Plexiglas is one of the latest and most versatile art making materials. In this course we will use the transparent properties of Pexi to create one of a kind wall pieces that are based on seeing through from one layer to the next. Using traditional art processes such as collage, painting and drawing, we will work directly on and under different layers of Plexi creating a colorful multilayered creations.

Build yourself a new face! Not that the one you?ve got isn?t excellent already, but why have only one when you could have two? A costume is art you can wear! In this class we will use a variety of mask-making, garment alteration and sculpture techniques along with a lot of imagination to make characters come to life on the stage or on the street. Campers will transform plaster, foam, wire, knits and knick-knacks into durable, dynamic and dramatic costumes.

The Art of Mathematics
Teaching Artist: Jenny Ernst

In this fun class, you will make works of art from surprisingly beautiful mathematical patterns. Like M.C. Escher, you'll create interesting tesselations. You'll learn to fold Japanese origami and cut paper folds that stretch out to reveal reflecting figures. You'll use straight lines to create optical illusions you only thought could be done on a computer! Be ready to make even more radical art that will leave you square rooting for more!


Mixed Media Landscape Drawings
Teaching Artist: Jenn Anthony

Come experiment with different drawing materials including charcoal, ink, graphite and more! We will use the outdoors as our subject matter and inspiration. Learn different techniques for translating a 3D image to 2D, and how to make things appear lifelike. We will explore shading, texture, line quality, and composition.


Wire Sculpture & Chainmaking Studio
Teaching Artist: David Dawson

We will learn a variety of ways to make shapes from metal wire- from ancient Etruscan and Roman chain patterns to fanciful three-dimensional drawings in multi-colored wire. Basic techniques and tools for manipulating brass, copper, and nickel wire will be the launching point for individually designed works of imagination and craft.
