Cooking with Michele (3 day class)
Teaching Artist: Michele Caputo

Learn to read a recipe and make a creative meal with this week's cooking lessons! We will make great desserts, delicious breakfast, lunch and dinnertime meals, eat together, and leave with a personal cookbook including the recipes we've used.

Recycled Fashion
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

There's no need to buy the latest trends, you can make it yourself with a little creative ingenuity. In this class we will transform any old garment into something new and hip. We will learn how to use a sewing machine and work with basic pattern techniques. Your old t-shirt may be worn and torn, but it could have a new life as a ruffled skirt or hooded coat . We'll be sewing up some fierce fashions for everyone, even if you've never sewn before.It's rewarding and fun to turn something tired into some inspired! Hand & Machine Sewing

Clay: Coils and Vessels
Teaching Artist: A. Walker

In this fun class, you will smoosh, roll, score, rib and carve your very own coil pot or vessel. We will explore shape and form while designing our own unique pieces. Using clay you will build a 3 D piece that will be bisque fired and glazed. Basic ceramic hand building techniques will be explored. You will be an expert at creating form at the end of this class.


Gesture Drawing (2 day class)
Teaching Artist: Judy Rattner

Campers will make flexible models of the figure noting where the joints are that enable the movement of major body parts. I.e. wrists, elbows, neck, waist, hips, knee etc. Beginning with stick figure, drawings of how they sit, how one arm crosses the other will be drawn in pencils. Students will then act as models for the group for 1 minute charcoal sketches. Day two, charcoal drawings will be enlarged and then campers will pose for each other using inks and brushes. This is a class of learning and fun will be had by all.

Simply Stylish Sewing
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

In this class we will create stylish bags , hats and pillows using simple patterns. We will learn how to use a basic home sewing machine and come up with fun ways to give our projects unique personal flair. We've got plenty of fantastic fabric and notions to get wildly creative with our sewing. Make a one of a kind item you'll really love and be proud of.

Decorative Origami & Juggling
Teaching Artist: Jeremy Shafer

In this class we will turn the craft of origami into a fine art, by applying paper decorating techniques to the making of geometric modular origami designs. In addition we'll throw in some juggling workshops and other surprises.

Hands on in the Kitchen
Teaching Artist: Melissa Crago

A week of fun hands on cooking projects for kids. Kids will learn a different cooking technique, and foods from different places in the world each day of the week. And we will also create a mini Park Day cook book for the kids to take with and make these delicious foods at home.

Acrylic Painting: Sunflowers (one day class
Teaching Artist: Gabriela Nunez

Students will learn how to paint sunflowers inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. We will be painting step by step and each piece of art will be creatively different. Students will be painting with acrylic paints.

Soap: Color, Shape and Scent (one day class)

A Favorite! Everyone one loves soap. During process of creating our soaps, we melt different types glycerin soaps. For each soap one scent (out of many) is mixed into the soap then the color is added and then the mixture is poured into the mold of choice. The process is the same for each class although the molds and techniques will vary. Each class will offer something different. So by all means take all 3, it is always great fun and has a function to beat!

 
June 29 - July 2, 2009

Capoeira: Brazilian Movement
Teaching Artist: Melissa Crago

Capoeira is an Afro-Brasilian dance / fight martial art. Through the course of the week kids will learn basics kicks and defense as well as some acrobatics, singing and playing musical instruments.


Cartooning
Teaching Artist: Doug Calderon

We enter the wonderful world of cartooning and learn to develop our drawing skill. Explore character development and storytelling. Create your very own cartoon character and comic strip. Drawing and inking techniques will be used, in addition to writing a comic book story.

Mosaic Tile Creations (3 day class)
Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Learn about creating designs with small pieces of tile. Using assorted tile shapes such as squares, rectangles and triangles, images can be made or geometric designs created. Each child will work on their own creation. Small shapes can create a pretty amazing design.


Mini Shibori & Natural Dyes (2 day class)
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

Did you know you can brew your own dyes out of common household ingredients like onion skins , cabbage , and cherries? In this 2 day mini class we will concoct our own natural dyes and experiment with traditional Japanese Shibori or tie dye techniques . It will be to dye for!

Sewing: Monster Madness

Dragons and Beasts , Unicorns and Griffins: Monsters are the most amazing creatures never to exist! In this class we will imagine and concoct wild and weird monsters of our own. Using simple hand stitching techniques and our creativity, we will sew up some fierce and furry creatures to be our beastly companions. The fun will be monstrous!

Take Apart Art
Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Learn how things are put together by taking them apart using all sorts of tools.. Take apart radios, computers, clocks, answering machines, video recorders... anything that can be taken apart. Once all the pieces are removed, students will begin to build with and sculpt these pieces onto a flat piece of wood and build upwards and outwards. All sorts of creations begin to appear and magical electronic worlds begin to take shape. This is an all time favorite class.

Watercolor Mono- Printing
Teaching Artist: David Dawson

Students will use water media including watercolor paint and brushes and also pencil and crayon to create original drawings and paintings on plexiglass plates. Then they'll be using an antique german etching press to transfer the images to paper. This technique allows for a lot of experimentation and innovation, and is a great introduction to the tranformative magic of printmaking. .

Yoga (2 day class)
Teaching Artist: Erin Collom

As campers are introduced to Yoga poses, meditation, affirmations, basic anatomy, and breath work, they will become more connected to themselves, others, and the world. While improving balance, flexibility, and energy, the classes will foster mental skills like concentration, curiosity, and non-judgement.

July 13 - July 17, 2009

Drawing Rainforest & Animals of the Andes
Teaching Artist: Gabriela Nunez

Students will learn how to draw tropical animals and some animals of the Andes such as a llama. We will drawing step by step and they be able to make their own choices (picking their color and create their own background). Kids will learn color pencils techniques.


Creating Sounds - Making Music
Teaching Artist: Jen Baker

Music students will be making their own air whistles which they will learn to play-and are welcome to take home at the conclusion of our session. We will explore many ways of creating our own music by improvising and composing songs for our new air whistles as well as learning popular songs. We will also use hand-made and classroom percussion and make new songs out of old ones with our own ingenious lyrics. Much of our work will be a teamwork effort, so get ready to help each other out and have a great time doing it!

Frankenstein Creature Construction - Sewing

In this class we will play Dr. Frankenstein by creating our own monsters out of pieces of other stuffed animals and dolls. We will work like mad scientists in our lab to create truly one of a kind creatures. We will use hand sewing , hot glue , absolutely whatever it takes to make our mis-matched monsters come alive!.

THIS WEEK IS FULL

Woodworking
Teaching Artist: David Dawson


We will work with a variety of common and exotic hardwoods, using handsaws, sanders, drills, clamps, glue and screws to fashion chairs or stools. Everyone will have the opportunity to make the project into a unique creation that shows off her or his individual taste and style. At the end of the week students will have learned some craftsmanship and they'll get to take home a functional piece of artwork that will last for years.

Digital Photography
Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Learn to use a camera and how to take photos. The class will be divided into a small group (3 or 4 kids per group) sharing a camera and taking turns photographing one another. The focus of the class will be on portraits and taking people photographs. We will have a slide show to review each persons photos and then print the photos at camp using a color printer. Students will also have a chance to make their own picture frames for their photos.

Embellished Quilting & Fabric Festooning
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

We will use fabric paint , photo transfers , and all manor of buttons and sequins to create very special 2 Dimensional textile works of art. We will bedazzle plain fabric into something truly fantastic .Then we will use sewing machines to patchwork our lovely squares together into a finished and very personal little quilt. The end result will be an absolute textile triumph!

Students will learn how to draw sea life creatures and they will be creating an under sea beautiful painting using acrylic paints. Kids will learn painting techniques.

Fantastic Felted Forms (2 day class)
Teaching Artist: Meredith MacLeod

In this 2 day class we will explore the basics of felting using two different methods. Students can experiment with sculptural 3 Dimensional pin felting to create small soft felted forms. We will also explore flat and messy soapy hand felting to turn a puff of wool into a piece of fabric. There will be plenty of felted fun for everyone

Painting Still Life: Real & Imagined
Teaching Artist: Judy Rattner

Ah Paint, Sweet paint which has a life and expression it own. How to make it speak, through line, color, texture, surface, composition. How do you make it speak, through concentration, observation and imagination. A variety of painting techniques and materials will be demonstrated by and explored by the campers. Still life will be used as a vehicle for exploring painting. Painters have painted still life in more ways than can be imagined. We will look at some variety of still life paintings including surrealist painters and artists who create their own worlds and languages. Focus, caring about what you are doing and taking risks are of in this class. Visual communication will begin to be developed. My painting classes have always been enthusiastic and individual attention is paid to each camper and their painting.

Chain Making
Teaching Artist: David Dawson

In this class students will learn a variety of different chain making techniques, using a variety of different metals. From the ancient Etruscan Chain to the more contemporary step chain. Campers will be introduced to the basics of metallurgy (metal working) with an emphasis on fun. Twist and link metal rings into beautiful chains.

Kite Making (2 day class)
Teaching Artist: Michele Menard

The joy of flying kite is still a fun way to spend the afternoon for all involved! Why not make your own home made kite that actually flys using commen house hold materials. Come to the kite class to find out how materials like newspapper and BBQ sticks can make a amazing diamond kite or any other kite design you can think of.

Soap Bubble Making (one day class)
Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Have you ever wondered how to make large soap bubbles fly into the sky? How about making thousands of bubbles all at once and watching them float away? Can you imagine floating inside one of these giant bubbles? We'll be making lot's and lot's of bubbles in this class. You're never too old or too young to make and enjoy soap bubbles.

 
August 3 - 7, 2009

Puppet Making Workshop
Teaching Artist: Doug Calderon

Students will explore and create various types of puppets including hand puppets, sock puppets, and marionetts. Different age groups will be making various age appropriate puppets. The history of puppetry and its cultural significance will also be discussed.

Clay: Relief Sculpture
Teaching Artist: A. Walker

You will use basic ceramic techniques to create and cast your own clay relief sculpture out of plaster. Then use your plaster relief as a stamp to recreate tiles in its image. Basic ceramic techniques will be covered. This is a great class for beginners as well as continuing students.

Drama
Teaching Artist: Michele Menard

Come explore the wonders of dramatic play that help to increase confidence, imagination social skill's and pure fun. The class will incorporate many mixed mediums such as movement, improvisation, creative writing, group singing, theater games and more. This class is suitable for all levels.

   
August 10 - 14, 2009

Shadow Puppet Theater
Teaching Artist: Michele Menard

Come explore the ancient ideas of shadow puppetry theater first developed over 2000 years ago!Campers will have the opportunity to learn the concepts of light manipulation, shadow scene design and the teaching of how to work and make shadow puppets. Shadow puppetry is a wonderful tool to aide in literacy education. Therefore a retelling a a choice poem or story will be included while using all the wonderful, magical tools of shadow theater for a fun and exciting class performance.

Jewelry & Adornment: Wire & Beads
Teaching Artist: Gabriela Nunez

In this class kids will learn the basic steps to create a beautiful piece of jewelry using wire and beads. Student will learn jewelry tools properly.

3 Dimensional Sculpture: "Transportation"
Teaching Artist: Kara Fortune

Using recycled materials, campers will be creating 3 Dimensional art. Using their imagination, campers will make planes, trains, automobiles, spacecraft or other vehicles of transportation.

Comedy Theater
Teaching Artist: Doug Calderon

Students will be engaged in basics of comedy theatre. Students will also explore stage movement, voice projection and comedy expression through various theatre games and exercises. Students will write and create a comedy performance. This exciting process will include script writing, comedy improvization and stage blocking. A final performance will be presented Friday (starting at 5:00 pm) in our outdoor performance setting.


Stone Shaping
Teaching Artist:Judy Rattner

Use tools such as: rasps, files, sandpaper, wax and steel wool to alter the natural state of a stone. See how you can make marks and shape a solid stone. See how soft and hard a stone can be and where you need to be gentle and where you can make larger alterations. The process itself is both exciting and rewarding. Create a new relationship; you, a stone and a hand tool.


Outdoor Lanscape Arts
Teaching Artist: Emily Frost
In this class, young artists will gain experience & exposure to working with a variety of fine arts and non-traditional materials. They will experience classical drawing and illustration instruction in outdoor settings, as well as more diverse approaches to landscape arts. Perspective, color theory, and art history will be discussed while learning drawing, painting and mixed media skills. We will also explore collaboration, installation & the relationship of our artistic investigations to our environment. This course is designed to encourage the imagination, self and nature awareness, expand creative skills and tools, work in groups socially and artistically, increase self-esteem and confidence and strengthen our connections to the surrounding elements.


Plaster Casting & Mold Making (one day class)
Teaching Artist: Moses LaSabra

Make your own personal "fossilized" stone (plaster) creation. Build a clay mold and put assorted objects into the clay. Pour plaster over the clay mold and let it harden. Pull it apart and discover what parts of your "buried" treasures are stuck into plaster "fossil" stone. The completed "fossil" will last for a very long time.
